Landscape designer Sara Bendrick comes to the rescue of people who love their homes but hate their yards on DIY Network’s I Hate My Yard. In this Q&A, Sara shares personal and professional fun facts!
Sara: "Create a comfortable space with outdoor furniture — try adding an outdoor rug and comfy pillows, fancy outdoor candles, etc. Check out my book, Big Impact Landscaping, for more ideas, such as how to make a fire pit from rocks in your own yard, patio spaces and garden areas."
Q: What was the last picture you took with your phone?
Sara: "Last photo I took was cacti with snow on it. Kind of a rare occasion!"
Q: If you had to move to another country, which would you pick and why?
Sara: "Mexico because it’s close enough to home, and my Spanish would get really good."
Q: What’s one thing we wouldn’t guess about you?
Sara: "I play ultimate frisbee every week!"
Q: What’s a common mistake homeowners make when they take on a home improvement project themselves?
Sara: "Not planning for the big picture when renovating a small area."
Q: Fill in the blank: The three things I can’t live without are ______________."
Sara: "Redwoods, my bed and homemade guacamole."
Q: What’s a must-have at any party you’re throwing?
Sara: "Every year I host a holiday party with a “crappy white elephant” gift exchange — no rules, any gift goes!"
Q: What project have you been most proud to work on?
Sara: "The Brady Bunch House renovation. I am the landscape contractor off camera for the project. It’s a great portfolio piece."
Q: Where do you go online to find inspiration?
Sara: "Pinterest and Instagram."
Q: What decor items are worth splurging on?
Sara: "Outdoor lights are worth splurging on, as they extend the use of the yard into the night and highlight the best in your landscape. Most light fixtures are meant to blend into the landscape, but if you can find cool fixtures that look great during the day and night, it’s a win-win. I got these star lanterns at Wayfair and love them."
